JAKARTA (Suara Karya): The National Standardization Agency (BSN) reminded to the rider of two wheels motorcycle that the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for the helmet will come into force on April 1st, 2010.
"This is based on Law No. 22 of year 2009 which requires all motorcycle riders and passengers as well to wear helmets and Regulation of the Minister of Industry Number 40/M-IND/PER/6/2008 about the Enforcement of SNI Helmet for Two Wheels Motorcycle Riders As a Compulsory," said Chief BSN Bambang Setiadi after the launch of SNI helmet for motorcycle riders in Jakarta, Monday (2/1).
Campaign of such SNI Helmet was started by Bambang with "SMS Blasting" by sending a message to 800 cellular phone numbers containing: "Remember from 1 April 2010 the motorcycle users should wear an SNI helmet."
According to Bambang, the application of SNI for this helmet is to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents which over the years keep increasing.
"In 2007 motorcycle accident rate reached for 4933 cases, in 2008 increased to 5898 cases, while in 2009 rose again to 6608 cases. It means about a thousand cases per year are increasing. Of course it is linked with the abundance of bikers," he said.
Helmet requirements, he said, refer to the SNI 1811:2007 which set the technical specifications for protective helmets used by riders and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles, including the classification of open standard helmet (open face) and a closed standard helmet (full face).
Material SNI helmet was this, he said, made of strong material and not metal, does not change when placed in an open space at a temperature of zero to 55 degrees Celsius for at least four hours, and not affected by ultraviolet radiation and must withstand the effect of gasoline , oil, soap, water, and other cleaners.
Under this SNI helmet construction is also strictly regulated, such as its construction should consist of hard shell with a smooth surface, damping layer and the chin strap which also must pass a standard lab test.
"In addition to cooperate with the police for its road application, with the Ministry of Industry related with its helmet manufacturer, we are also working with the University of Indonesia for lab tests of this SNI helmet," he said. (Antara)
